The word “Waipahu” is derived from the Hawaiian words “Wai” and “Pahu” which means bursting water. It is a census designated place. It was formerly a sugar plantation town. The Oahu Sugar Company was incorporated in 1897. Waipahu was named by the company’s directors as the site for sugar mill. In 1923, an athletic field was built in the town. It is now known as Hans L’Orange park.
