Independence is an old town with a rich history. It served as a jumping off point to the west, with many wagon trails stopping here to be supplied for the arduous journey west. Additionally, Truman lived here and you can still follow his daily walking trail by following the posted signs around the main square. In summer, there is a great craft festival called Santa-Cali-Gon featuring many local artisans.
