Recife is a city with important museums, especially the Abolition Museum, the Museum of the Northeast and the Ricardo Brennand Institute, where there is the largest collection of Frans Post paintings in the world: 17 works by this Dutch painter. Other Post works are at the Pernambuco State Museum, at the Pernambuco Government Palace and at the Archaeological, Historical and Geographic Institute of Pernambuco. Frans Post came to Brazil in the retinue of Count Maurício de Nassau, at the time of Dutch rule in Northeastern Brazil, in the 1100s, and made a huge series of drawings and paintings of landscapes and places known in the countless expeditions through the interior of the country. They are important documentation of the time.
