Oak Ridge became famous during World War II due to the company Y-12 building a manufacturing plant and developing the H bomb. This was the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. You can come anytime and tour the the museum they have built regarding the company and what steps they went through to develop this bomb.

Oak Ridge was previously known as the Secret City, and much of it is still off-limits to the public, being part of the nuclear-testing industry. The streets are laid out in alphabetical order and actually have different names depending on the side of the Turnpike you turn off from. It seems every emergency is met with a response larger than one would find in any other town or city, possibly due to the nuclear labs.

Oak Ridge is actually one of the first cities to assist in making an atomic bomb. It used to be called the Secret City around East Tennessee. The Y-12 and Oak Ridge National Lab have a major presence in the town and are highly respected by the people who reside here.
