It is has many old gold mines around the area. The town also has one of the biggest hospitals in the province and also a the biggest single-phased mall.

The residents are diverse–whites, blacks, and Indians all coexisting in harmony. Businesses are a success here while jobs are hard to find. There are three malls with Matlosana Mall being the most popular. There are plenty of grocery shops. Restaurants are quite few considering the population.
