Harlan is a small town with few opportunities for employment. However, this town contains a rich, vibrant history and some of the kindest people in the world. There is always a friendly face and a helping hand ready to assist when the need arises. While we may not be home to a thriving economy, we are home to a thriving population of good people.

Harlan, Kentucky, could be considered an infamous place, considering its background of violence in the coalfields during the union organizing era of the 1930s, but our county has character and history. Harlan County is home for me and I love the close-knit community and its history. Once the fourth-largest county in the state during the 1940s when the coal industry was at its peak, Harlan County has dropped from almost 80,000 residents to around 28,000 due to the decline in mining. There are some disadvantages to living in a small town, but it has always been home for me. Anyone who enjoys getting away from crowds and enjoying the outdoors would enjoy living here due to our mountains and opportunities for four-wheeling, fishing and hunting.

The advice I would provide to anyone moving here is quite simple. It is an average town, with average people. Everyone seems to know everyone, and will gladly accept new members to the community. My town is very quiet, and is easily overlooked by many. In simple words you can describe my town as one big happy family.
