Despite its reputation for being the home of Afrikaans, there is the classic proudly South African diversity found in Pretoria. There’s a mix of English, Northern Sotho and Tswana just to name a few. These other languages actually outnumber the number of Afrikaans speakers and shows that Pretoria is actually much more diverse than most people think. Pretoria has an unusual feather in its cap – it has the longest urban street in South Africa. Stanza Bopape Street (formerly known as Church Street) is the longest street in any of our country’s cities, and at 26 km, is one of the longest urban streets in the world! Most people know that Pretoria is famous for its Jacaranda-lined streets, which lead to the city’s nickname – Jacaranda City. The Jacarandas bloom around the same time as the local university students are writing their big exams and it’s a local belief that if a flower falls on your head you’ll have the best of luck.

It would depend on where in the city you move to, it’s a fairly large urban area. The East, or Pretoria East rather, is considered an up-market area with relatively low levels of crime compared to the other areas of the city. Pretoria West is predominantly industrial, with many car dealerships, pawn shops and low-end businesses interspersed between factories and industrial yards.
