If one moves to Cuenca, Ecuador, they should be prepared to learn Spanish. Without the ability to speak Spanish, one might feel lost, isolated, and ill-equipped to handle navigating the most basic errands. Cuenca is at a high altitude and thus one must also be prepared for frequent bouts of lightheadedness and a weakened immune system. However, the cost of living, the history of the city, the richness of the culture, and the beauty of the mountains make it worthwhile and desirable for many foreign citizens.

If you’re interested in moving to Cuenca there are two things you should consider. First, the weather is cold year-round, although it’s not cold enough for snow. This might not sit well with you if you come from tropical weather. Second, the jargon used by the people in the city differs from standard Spanish, which means that you will have to make an effort to learn the way people speak here. Finally, Cuenca’s cost of living is very low so you won’t have to go through economic hardship. On the other hand, finding a job is difficult.
