Living in Bridgeport, Connecticut:
Tips for Moving and Visiting

If you’re moving to Bridgeport be informed it is an old north-eastern post-industrial small city. It was initially built up (its grid laid down) shortly after the American Civil War ended in 1865 In the late 19th century it became a significant arms manufacturing center with companies like Remington Arms located here. After about 1960 most of the manufacturing companies moved elsewhere leaving many of the local workers unemployed. Today Bridgeport is considered part of the American “rust-belt” of largely abandoned and decaying post industrial cities.

Bridgeport has a wonderful art scene for a city of its size and disposition. Housatonic Community college rotates many wonderful pieces of old and new art within its gallery and throughout the campus building. There is another gallery on Main street, and one around the corner on Golden Hill Avenue. One of the highlights of summer is the cities art crawls, in which people free to move between these three locations (and others) while enjoying music, food, wine, and other festivities.
