If you moved to my city of Baton Rouge, you would have to know flavor and sports. Baton Rouge has some of the best cajun food to offer besides the great city of New Orleans. You would also have to know that sports is super important to the people of my city. LSU stadium is in the heart of Baton Rouge, which is right inside the university’s campus. Tailgating, is an event you need to experience if you find yourself inside this city. Students and residents drinking and cooking food for hours before watching their favorite sports team, the LSU Tigers.

Most people think of New Orleans when they think of Louisiana; however, Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and has become more heavily populated since Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans in August 2005. Due to the increase of population in Baton Rouge, many citizens are frustrated with the heavy traffic. The city has tried to improve this issue by adding more lane to the roadways.

Baton Rouge is a beautiful area. A report conducted by Louisiana State University found that 44% of the city has green coverage. This means that a little less than half of the city has trees, grass, or bushes! The appeal of this an be difficult to understand for someone who was raised in a more rural area, but for those who have spent time in drab, concrete dominated cities the prospect of having the amenities provided by a large population without sacrificing lovely scenery is an enticing novelty.

Currently, Baton Rouge is experiencing a high rate of crime. Suburban areas outside the city proper are usually preferred by families. Neighboring parishes and smaller outlying cities have trended towards more desirable public schools and safer neighborhoods.

Baton rouge is a slow paced city. Many of the people here related or know each other. There is not a lot of activity for younger people, however there is a lot of history that can be learned by visiting the local museums. For anyone who has an interest in the food industry there is a large variety of restaurants in the city.

In August of 2016, what most Louisiana residents assumed was a typical summer thunderstorm lead to an extremely rare, tragic event that Baton Rouge had never seen in its history. Severe rain stalled over Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas for almost three days straight, leading to what many meteorologists called the “100 Year Flood.” Torrential, incessant rainfall inundated the city’s drainage systems, which were simply not prepared nor designed to handle rainfall of this magnitude. As a result, 1,000s lost their homes.

Those who relocate to Baton Rouge should be warned of the city’s banality. Having resided in this city for four years, I can assert with confidence that it is an area deprived of culture and inhabited by those seeking college-oriented bars and sub-par restaurants. Had it not been for my residency at LSU, I certainly would not have moved here on my own accord. It is with great solemnity that I notify any future residents of the dangers of moving to a city littered with a surplus of alcohol and a lack of decent Greek restaurants.

Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana. There is a lot to do here, including parades, festivals, and concerts. The LSU Tigers are a huge draw as well. And you can’t forget the delicious and spicy food! South Louisiana cajun culture is quite popular all around the country.
